DAY 1 · NAIROBI

“Karibu Kenya” and Welcome to East Africa – Introduction to Maasai Culture, Customs, Languages, Local Drinks, and the Great Migration Ecosystem.

Karibu Kenya – welcome to East Africa! Welcome to the land of the Great Migration – the largest movement of land mammals on earth. Nairobi, the safari capital of Africa, is our gateway to the endless plains of the Maasai Mara and the Serengeti. On arrival at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, we’ll meet you and transfer you to our eco-lodge on the outskirts of the city. After freshening up from your journey, we’ll meet at 4:00 pm at our lodge for our orientation meeting where you’ll have the opportunity to meet your fellow travelers and have your first introduction to the rich cultural heritage, traditions, customs, your first Swahili and Maa (Maasai) language lessons, and the ecology of the Great Migration. Then, as the colors of the day slowly turn to night, we’ll meet up with our Maasai friends where we will settle down for our first taste of East Africa – a Culinary Cultural Experience where you’ll be introduced to Kenyan classics including githeri (maize and beans), sukuma wiki (braised greens), and irio (mashed peas and potatoes) all 100% veganized specially for us.

DAY 2 · MAASAI MARA

Journey to the Maasai Mara – Private Conservancy Arrival – First Game Drive and Conservation Circle with a Maasai Elder.

After a traditional Kenyan breakfast, we’ll drive across the floor of the Great Rift Valley – with its dramatic escarpments and volcanic landscapes – as we make our way to the world-famous Maasai Mara. But unlike most visitors, we are not staying in the crowded national reserve. We are heading to a private conservancy – Mara North or Naboisho – where night drives, walking safaris, off-road driving, and zero vehicle queues are allowed. These conservancies are leased from Maasai landowners, and your stay directly pays for wildlife protection. After a picnic lunch along the way, we’ll arrive at our tented camp in the late afternoon. Settle in, then set out for our first game drive as the sun begins its descent. Lions, elephants, giraffes, zebras – the Mara in golden hour is unforgettable. As night falls, we gather around the campfire for our first savannah Conservation Circle. A Maasai elder who helped found this conservancy shares the story of how the land was converted from cattle grazing to wildlife protection – the community meetings, the skeptics, the first tourism revenue.

DAY 3 · MAASAI MARA

Full Day in the Private Conservancy – Migration River Crossings – Night Drive.

Today we wake before dawn. The morning game drive (6:00-10:00 am) is when predators are most active and the light is softest. We position ourselves along the Mara River, where herds of wildebeest and zebra gather. October is peak river crossing season – the most dramatic moment of the Great Migration. Crocodiles wait in the currents. The dust rises. The air fills with snorts and splashes. No crossing is guaranteed (the migration follows rain and grazing), but we are here at the best possible time. After a midday rest and lunch at camp, we return to the savannah in the late afternoon (4:00-6:30 pm) – golden light, animals returning to water sources. But the day is not over. After dinner, we go out again on a night drive – prohibited in the national reserve, but allowed here. With red-filtered spotlights, we search for leopards hunting, hyenas patrolling, and the Mara after dark. The Conservation Circle tonight is led by a conservancy ranger, who explains how private conservancies work, how lease fees are distributed, and how anti-poaching patrols operate.

DAY 4 · MAASAI MARA

Walking Safari with Armed Maasai Rangers – Second Migration Day – Conservation Circle with Maasai Guide.

A different kind of safari today – on foot. Just after sunrise, we meet our armed Maasai rangers for a walking safari across the conservancy. This is not a nature stroll. You learn to read tracks (lion, hyena, elephant), identify medicinal plants, and understand the savannah from a Maasai perspective – as a place of danger, sustenance, and spiritual significance. Your Maasai guide has been reading these signs since childhood. After the walk, we return to camp for breakfast, then head out for another game drive focused on the migration. If we haven’t seen a crossing yet, we reposition. If we have, we track other wildlife – cheetahs on the plains, elephants in the riverine forest, hippos in the pools. In the late afternoon, we have one final opportunity for photography and reflection. The Conservation Circle tonight is led by a Maasai guide who explains how traditional ecological knowledge is being combined with modern conservation science – and what that partnership looks like on the ground.

DAY 5 · MAASAI COMMUNITY CONSERVANCY

Lease Fee Dialogue – Land Stewardship Walk – Conservation Circle with Founding Elder.

Today we leave the wildlife behind – to understand the human side of conservation. We visit a Maasai community conservancy – land owned collectively by Maasai families who have chosen to lease it for wildlife protection rather than convert it to farming or settlement. In the morning, a Maasai elder leads us on a land stewardship walk across the conservancy. He explains how conservancy lease fees work – families are paid for each acre set aside for wildlife. He shows us the trade-offs: fewer cattle, more wildlife, income from tourism instead of livestock. He is honest about the challenges: drought, human-wildlife conflict, pressure to sell land for development. In the afternoon, we sit for a facilitated conservation dialogue – your questions, their honest answers. “Do you ever want to kill lions?” “What does tourism actually pay for?” “Would your children choose this life?” The evening Conservation Circle is led by a founding elder of the conservancy – the person who attended the first community meetings, faced the skeptics, and watched the first tourism revenue arrive. His story is the story of conservation in East Africa.

DAY 6 · SERENGETI (TANZANIA)

Cross into Tanzania – Border Conservation Briefing – Wildlife Scientist Joins the Group.

After breakfast, we drive to the Isebania border crossing and enter Tanzania – the other half of the migration ecosystem. The Serengeti is not a separate park; it is the same ecosystem as the Maasai Mara, divided by an invisible line drawn by colonial powers. The wildebeest do not recognize it. Conservation must work across it. In the afternoon, we arrive in the Northern Serengeti – where the migration herds are concentrated in October. We settle into our eco-lodge. And then we meet the person who will change how you see this place: a wildlife scientist – an active field researcher working in the Serengeti ecosystem. She joins our group for the next two days. In the evening, she gives a briefing on the state of the Serengeti, the long-term data sets (lion populations, wildebeest tracking), and how climate change is shifting the timing and location of river crossings. The Conservation Circle tonight is the border crossing debrief – the politics of cross-border conservation.

DAY 7 · SERENGETI

Serengeti Research Institute Field Station – Following the Migration Herds – Citizen Science Data Collection.

Today we go behind the scenes. In the morning, we visit the Serengeti Research Institute field station – the hub of wildlife research in the ecosystem for decades. Our scientist co-host shows us where the data lives: lion population monitoring reports, wildebeest tracking maps, camera trap networks. We learn how researchers count wildebeest from the air, how GPS collars reveal migration routes, and how the data is used to make conservation decisions. In the afternoon, we follow the migration herds – not for photography, but for data collection. You will learn: how researchers identify individual animals, what behaviour they record, and why citizen science matters. You are given a field card and asked to record your observations. Your data will be submitted to the Serengeti research database. This is not a simulation. You are now part of the research team. The Conservation Circle tonight is led by the wildlife scientist, who shares findings from long-term research – and answers your questions.

DAY 8 · NGORONGORO CRATER

The Garden of Eden – Full-Day Crater Descent – Big Five in One Location.

Today we drive to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area – home to the world’s largest intact volcanic caldera. The view from the crater rim at sunrise is staggering: 600 meters down to the crater floor, 20 kilometers across, a self-contained world of grassland, swamp, forest, and lake. But we do not just look from the rim. We descend. Before dawn, we drive down the steep crater road and spend a full day on the crater floor (8+ hours, picnic lunch included). The crater is one of the best places in Africa to see the Big Five (lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, rhino) in a single day. The black rhino population here is one of the last viable populations in East Africa. We also visit the hippo pool, where dozens of hippos wallow and snort, and Lake Magadi, where flamingos gather (seasonal). The Conservation Circle tonight is led by a Ngorongoro ranger, who speaks on the challenges of managing the crater – high visitor numbers (up to 500 vehicles per day), human-wildlife conflict with resident Maasai, and rhino protection strategies.

DAY 9 · UGANDA – KIBALE

Fly to Uganda – Scenic Drive to Kibale – Forest Arrival – Conservation Circle on Primate Conservation.

After breakfast, we transfer to Kilimanjaro International Airport for a flight to Entebbe, Uganda (approx. 1.5-2 hours, included). On arrival, we are met by our Ugandan guide – a former Uganda Wildlife Authority ranger with primate conservation experience. We drive west to Kibale National Park (approx. 5-6 hours), passing through tea estates, rolling hills, and the lush countryside of western Uganda. The landscape is impossibly green. We arrive at our forest eco-lodge on the edge of Kibale – home to the highest density of primates in Africa. In the evening, we gather for a Conservation Circle introduction to Uganda’s primate conservation: mountain gorillas, chimpanzees, and the communities around them.

DAY 10 · KIBALE NATIONAL PARK

Chimpanzee Habituation Experience – Full Day in the Forest – Night Walk.

The chimpanzee habituation experience is unlike a standard chimp trek. You spend 4–6 hours with one chimpanzee community – following them as they feed, groom, travel, and interact. Habituated chimps have been acclimated to human presence over years of researcher contact. You are with them long enough to see behaviour no brief encounter ever reveals. Your guide narrates continuously – individual names, family dynamics, territorial calls. This is fieldwork, not tourism. You learn to distinguish the pant-hoot, the warning scream, the quiet grooming murmur. After returning to the lodge for lunch and rest, we go back into the forest after dark. The night walk (7:30 pm) is a different world – bush babies (galagos) leaping between trees with glowing eyes, pottos moving slowly along branches, the eerie call of the tree hyrax. The Conservation Circle tonight is led by a Kibale ranger, who speaks on chimpanzee population trends and the threats they face.

DAY 11 · BWINDI

Buffer Zone Farm Visit – Travel to Bwindi – Batwa Cultural Experience.

After breakfast, we visit a buffer-zone farm – agricultural land that sits between Kibale’s park boundary and human settlement. This is where human-wildlife conflict is most acute. Your guide facilitates a frank dialogue with farming families about crop raiding (elephants, chimps), coexistence strategies, and what tourism revenue means for their children’s education. Then we drive south to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park (approx. 5-6 hours) – home to roughly half the world’s remaining mountain gorillas. The road winds through the Kigezi Highlands, where every hillside is terraced and farmed by hand. In the late afternoon, we experience the Batwa cultural experience. The Batwa lived in Bwindi Forest for thousands of years before it became a national park. Today, they share their heritage through traditional hunting and gathering demonstrations, fire-making using forest materials, medicinal plant knowledge, and music and dance. This experience directly supports Batwa community initiatives. The Conservation Circle tonight is led by our guide, who shares the history of gorilla protection in Bwindi – a story of poaching, civil war, and eventual recovery.

DAY 12 · BWINDI – GORILLA TREKKING

The Encounter – One Hour with Mountain Gorillas – Conservation Debrief.

This is it. The day that brought you here. Rise at 5:30 am for a briefing at park headquarters. Your group of 8 is assigned a gorilla family and a ranger team. The trek begins – through bamboo forest, along ridgelines, into dense vegetation. It can take 30 minutes or 4 hours. And then, through the undergrowth, the family appears. A silverback watching you with the same curiosity you feel. A mother nursing her infant. Juveniles playing in the canopy. One hour. A thousand words will never describe it. You are one of only 8 people on earth to see this family today. Post-trek: a debrief with your ranger, who explains this family’s history – births, deaths, migrations, conflicts – and current threats. You complete a citizen science card, recording each individual you identified. The Conservation Circle tonight is a post-trek reflection with your guide and ranger – what you saw, what you felt, what you will carry home.

DAY 13 · ENTEBBE

Lake Bunyonyi – Dugout Canoeing – Island Hopping – Farewell Dinner.

After breakfast, we drive to Lake Bunyonyi – “place of many little birds.” This is one of Africa’s most beautiful lakes, dotted with 29 islands and surrounded by terraced hills that have been farmed for centuries. In the morning, we take a dugout canoe – a traditional hand-carved canoe – and paddle across the lake with a local fisherman as our guide. We visit Punishment Island (where unmarried pregnant women were once abandoned – a historical site now used for education) and Bwama Island (a former leper colony turned school). We stop at a Bakiga community for a cultural exchange – meeting local farming families, learning traditional agriculture, and sharing stories. We also have the opportunity to swim – Lake Bunyonyi is crocodile and hippo-free, one of the few lakes in Africa where you can swim safely. After lunch at a lodge overlooking the lake, we drive to Entebbe (approx. 7-8 hours). In the evening, we gather for a farewell dinner at a local vegan restaurant, where we share our most important moments from the journey. The final Conservation Circle is led by each traveler, who shares one commitment they will make at home for conservation – inspired by the migration, the rangers, the Maasai, the scientist, the Batwa, and the gorillas.

After a final vegan breakfast together, your Vegan Trails team transfers you to Entebbe International Airport for your departure flight. Your Impact Report will arrive by email within two weeks: every conservancy lease fee, every ranger patrol hour, every community contribution, every tree planted that your booking funded. Thank you for following the wild path – from the migration to the mountain gorilla. Everything you protected here stays.

BOOKING CONDITIONS

Please read the following Booking Conditions carefully. Vegan Trails only accepts bookings subject to these conditions. The terms, conditions, and provisions outlined below in this agreement (“the Agreement”) apply to all tours and adventures provided by Vegan Trails, a company registered with its head office in Kampala, Uganda (“the Company”).

By submitting a booking request along with the non-refundable deposit of US$550 (five hundred fifty dollars) – higher than other tours due to gorilla permit commitment – you acknowledge that you have read, understood, accepted, and agreed to all the terms, conditions, and provisions contained in the Agreement. You also acknowledge that the deposit is NOT REFUNDABLE.

It is understood that all provisions of the Agreement, in whole or in part, are governed by and subject to the laws of Uganda. The Client and the Company agree to submit to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of Uganda regarding any claim or matter arising under the Agreement.

The Client and the Company agree that the Agreement and all its terms and conditions will take effect once the Company has accepted the Client’s booking request, confirmed receipt of the Client’s non-refundable deposit, and issued an Adventure Confirmation Receipt. Once the Company has confirmed the receipt of the non-refundable deposit, no changes to the listed adventure price will be permitted as per the Agreement.

The Client making the booking (which is subject to the terms of the Agreement) warrants that they have full authority to do so on behalf of all persons named in the booking. The Client confirms that all persons included in the booking are aware of and accept the conditions of the Agreement. The Company reserves the right to decline any booking at its discretion as outlined in the Agreement.

PRICES & PAYMENTS

The Client understands that all quoted prices are in United States Dollars. The Client acknowledges that the $550 booking deposit is NON-refundable. The Client agrees to pay the remaining adventure cost in full no later than 90 days before the adventure’s commencement date. Additionally, if the Client books a tour departing within 90 days of the booking date, full payment is required within one week of submitting the booking form.

GORILLA PERMIT POLICY

Gorilla permits are non-refundable and non-transferable. Once your permit is purchased (usually at the time of booking), the full cost of the permit ($800) is non-recoverable regardless of cancellation timing.

CHANGES

Changes made by the Client to their booking date(s) will incur an amendment fee of $150, plus an additional $100 if the trip includes a local flight (included in this tour – Tanzania to Uganda). If the Client decides to transfer their tour date(s) to a later date, any discounts received on the original booking will be forfeited, and the Client must pay any difference in fare.

The remaining deposit balance must be used within 12 months from the original booking date. Changes and/or refunds for extra hotel nights can be made without any additional charge if requests are submitted at least 30 days before the scheduled hotel reservation date. We will not issue refunds for unused hotel nights unless we receive notification at least 30 days before the scheduled reservation date.

The Client understands that any changes to the original booking must be confirmed in writing (via email, postal mail, or signed fax) by the individual who made the original booking and must be accompanied by any applicable amendment fees as outlined in the Agreement.

The Company will make its best efforts to operate all adventures and tours as advertised. However, by entering into the Agreement, the Client accepts that it may be necessary or advisable to vary, alter, or modify an itinerary and its contents due to prevailing local conditions. The Company reserves the right to cancel or change, at any time, the facilities and/or services (including but not limited to transportation, accommodations, sights, and other arrangements) and to substitute alternative arrangements of comparable monetary value, comfort, and quality standards without compensation to the Client. The Company accepts no liability for any loss of enjoyment resulting from these changes.

The Company also accepts no liability or responsibility for any airline cancellation fees or other fees not directly paid to the Company by the Client. The Client understands that it may be necessary to adjust the sequence of an adventure itinerary and some destinations en route due to poor road conditions, weather, acts of civil strife, changes to transport schedules, or other prevailing local conditions. The Company cannot be held liable for loss of enjoyment resulting from such delays, cancellations, or adjustments.

CANCELLATION BY THE CLIENT

The Client can cancel their adventure at any time, provided that the cancellation is communicated in writing (via Email or WhatsApp Message). Cancellation charges will apply as mentioned herein.

Cancellation Fees:

• 120 days or more: loss of deposit ($550) plus cost of gorilla permit if already purchased.
• 119 – 90 days: 50% of total adventure cost plus cost of gorilla permit if already purchased.
• 89 – 60 days: 75% of total adventure cost plus cost of gorilla permit if already purchased.
• 59 – 0 days: 100% of total adventure cost (including gorilla permit).

Furthermore, the Client hereby understands and agrees that the Company will bear no responsibility for airline rescheduling and/or cancellation fees charged by the airline and/or their assigned agents or representatives.

CANCELLATION BY THE COMPANY

The Company’s adventures are guaranteed to depart on the dates confirmed by the Company to the Client at the time of the Client’s booking. If for some unforeseen reason due to circumstances outside of the control of the Company, such as extremely adverse weather conditions, civil strife, or any other reason the Company may feel the safety and smooth progress of the adventure will be affected, is to take place and force the Company to cancel the adventure, the Company will advise the Client of such cancellation immediately. In such cases, the Company hereby agrees to offer the Client alternative arrangements; if the Client does not accept these arrangements then the Company will refund all payments made by the Client to the Company. However, the Company will not be held liable for any additional costs, charges, fees, and/or expenses the Client may have incurred outside those payments made directly to the Company by the Client.

TRAVEL INSURANCE

The Client must maintain valid travel insurance for the duration of the adventure. This insurance must provide adequate coverage for, at a minimum, trip cancellation, medical expenses, and repatriation if the Client cannot continue the adventure due to illness or injury, including coverage for helicopter rescue and air ambulance services. Gorilla trekking and chimpanzee habituation are considered high-risk activities by many insurers – please verify your policy covers them.

Participation in the adventure without adequate insurance may result in the Client being denied continuation without entitlement to any refund. The Company further recommends that the Client consider obtaining additional coverage for trip cancellation, curtailment, and loss or damage to luggage and personal effects. Full comprehensive coverage is strongly advised.

It is solely responsible for procuring and maintaining the required insurance coverage. The Company is not liable for any loss, injury, or expense incurred by the Client, regardless of whether the Client has obtained insurance coverage, in accordance with the terms of this Agreement.

GENERAL TERMS & CONDITIONS

•  Use of Likeness: The Client acknowledges and agrees that the Company may use any photographs, video, or other images of the Client taken during any of the Company’s adventures in all forms of media now known or developed in the future, solely for bona fide promotional or marketing purposes, without compensation. Such use may include, but is not limited to, brochures, slides, video presentations, websites, and social media.
•  Fitness to Participate: The Client is responsible for ensuring, before booking, that they are physically and mentally fit to complete the adventure itinerary. Gorilla trekking requires moderate to strenuous physical fitness – you may be walking for 2–6 hours on steep, muddy, uneven terrain at altitudes up to 8,000 feet. Clients aged over 85 (eighty-five) may be required to provide medical evidence of fitness to travel. The Company does not accept unaccompanied minors (under the age of 18).
•  Disclosure of Medical Conditions: Any Client with an illness, disability, or undergoing treatment for any physical or medical condition must fully disclose such information to the Company at the time of booking. Clients must also plan for the provision of any required medication or treatment during the adventure. Failure to provide accurate disclosure constitutes a breach of this Agreement and may result in exclusion or removal from the adventure without refund.
•  Sharing Contact Information: By completing the booking form, the Client consents to the Company sharing their contact information with third parties involved in the operation of the specific adventure. Such information will be used solely for purposes directly related to the adventure and will not be disclosed for any other purpose.
• Authority of Adventure Leaders: The Client agrees to accept the authority and decisions of the Company’s adventure leader(s) throughout the adventure. If, in the judgment of the adventure leader(s), the Client’s health, behavior, or conduct endangers the safety, comfort, or overall enjoyment of the adventure, the Client may be excluded from all or part of the adventure without entitlement to a refund. The Company shall not be liable for any charges or expenses incurred by the Client before, during, or after the adventure in such cases.
•  Compliance with Local Laws: The Client agrees to comply with all laws
